Macs in the Enterprise

March 10th, 2006 No comments

Properly supporting Macs in the enterprise (i.e. with an Exchange Server) can be a tricky proposition. Sure, Entourage works fairly well, but is a lame carbon app that still doesn’t work 100% as it should. I could go on and on about the problems Entourage has for Mac users, including an aversion to it’s use.

The biggest problems for enterprise users however deal with the calendars.

iCal comes with every mac, and in many respects is a nice and fast calendar program. It also has it’s annoyances, but a few of these can be overcome by re-writing some key applescripts that are included inside iCal. These are issues that Apple could and should deal with and it would be easy for them to do so.

Snerdware’s GroupCal shows some promise, but the developer of the product isn’t very friendly and it’s expensive for what it does. It’s also very buggy.

OSX and Apple’s Mail and iCal should provide support for properly processing MS Calendar invitations.
