DUSC – An Update on Pier 40
DUSC and GGFC would like you to be aware of the ongoing need to protect the fields at Pier 40.
We are grateful to Rich Caccappolo of Greenwich Village Little League for preparing this statement:
We are incredibly fortunate to have the amazing fields at Pier 40 our district – without it, we simply would not be able to operate GVLL, DUSC, GGFC or our other youth sport programs at our current sizes, scope and level of quality. Pier 40 is the cornerstone of our leagues. Many of us have been working over the last 2 years to ensure it remains open, safe and accessible for our neighborhood and the entire metro region.
Earlier this week, Assembly Member Deborah Glick and State Senators Tom Duane and Daniel Squadron sent a letter supporting a proposal to spend $57 million of the federal “stimulus” funding granted to NY State on Pier 40 infrastructure repair (you can see the letter on www.greenwichvillagelittleleague.org). Now they need our help to persuade others to approve this essential work.
Below, you will find links to send messages to other officials who will influence this decision. Please take ten minutes to help take advantage of this huge opportunity to secure the future of our pier. Tell them you are writing to support the Hudson River Park Trust’s proposal to use stimulus funds for Pier 40 repairs and tell them why Pier 40 is important to your family.
If you like, you can include some or all of the following information:
The Hudson River Park Trust has requested a $57 million of federal stimulus funds to repair the roof, piles, and fenders at Pier 40. These projects are “shovel ready”, meaning work can begin in less than four months.
Without these repairs, the future of an important community resource is at risk.
Thousands of families and dozens of sports leagues and schools depend on the wonderful sports fields at Pier 40.
More than half of the operating expenses of Hudson River Park are provided by income from 2000 car parking spaces used mostly by our neighbors.
The docks provide opportunities for recreational access to the Hudson River and an important escape resource in case of a major emergency.
Repairing the pier will provide an opportunity to expand the park enhancing uses of the pier in the future.
If the pier were to have to close, the loss to families our communities would be great and the loss of income to the park from the pier would create an unaffordable burden on city and state budgets.
Please do this TODAY because decisions are being made very quickly. Of course, if you have person contact with anyone who may be able to help, please contact them directly, or let us know.
Also please consider forwarding this email to others who may want to help.
NY State Speaker Sheldon Silver
NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn
Please also take a few minutes to thank our legislators who have taken the lead.
